The New Orlando Terminal Has Arrived On Schedule

The $2.8 billion Terminal C in Orlando Airport is open for business! The 300 acre and 15 gate terminal can accommodate up to 20 aircraft. With certification as one of the first LEED v4 airport campuses, it reflects Orlando International Airport’s (MCO)  longstanding commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The terminal hopes to increase MCO passenger capacity by 25 percent or 10-12 million annual passengers.

From the moment they enter Terminal C, visitors are immersed in dozens of innovative technology systems that support both the building and its functionality, while expediting the passenger process. From baggage handling to screening to wayfinding, passengers can navigate Terminal C more efficiently, thanks to high-tech features. More than 1,000 high-definition informational displays guide travelers from check-in through boarding. Never before seen in an aviation space, large-scale multimedia Public Art installations with custom-created content provide 12–15K immersive and interactive visual experiences to explore the knowns and unknowns of greater Central Florida

“This day has been a long time coming but we’re finally here. Terminal C is open and what a benefit it is to the community,” says Kevin Thibault, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “This state-of-the-art terminal is leading the way to a truly intermodal future for all of Central Florida, where passengers will be able to take a plane, a train or an automobile from one location. Today, the vision has become reality.”

Aer Lingus flight from Manchester, England helped open Terminal C to the public. The airlines servicing Terminal C include Aer Lingus, Azul, British Airways, Caribbean Airlines, Emirates, GOL,Icelandair, Lufthansa, Norse and the anchor airline is JetBlue.  There are also 33 retail and food and beverage concepts including local and national brands present for terminal visitors to enjoy.

Although turning the airport’s vision into reality required navigating an unprecedented number of challenges, the end result is a facility that addresses the airport’s exponential growth and is prepared to serve an increasingly diverse mix of passengers seeking access to Central Florida.

“Terminal C has been a highly complex project, driven by the latest technology and incorporating the industry’s most innovative systems,” says Davin Ruohomaki, senior director of Engineering and Construction at GOAA. “It is a testament to professionalism and teamwork that this project has progressed in an efficient and timely manner.”
