North Central Countryside Region

North Central Countryside Region

Florida’s North Central Countryside Region offers a peaceful alternative to the state’s bustling beaches and theme parks. Nestled between Gainesville and Jacksonville, this rural region is defined by winding bike trails, scenic lakes, and welcoming small towns. Union and Bradford counties sit at the heart of this area, where nature and community come together in a landscape perfect for outdoor recreation and quiet getaways.

At the center of the region is Lake Butler, a serene lake surrounded by tall trees and almost entirely undeveloped shoreline. The town of Lake Butler sits on the eastern shore and offers one of Florida’s rare freshwater beaches at Lakeside Park—a family-friendly spot with a playground, splash park, picnic tables, and grills. While lodging is limited in Union County, it makes an ideal day trip destination, particularly for cyclists. The town marks both the western end of the Palatka–Lake Butler State Trail and the northern end of a 61-mile cycling route to Gainesville. Riders enjoy smooth pavement, wide shoulders, and minimal traffic—a perfect setting for a flat and fast ride. History buffs can stop by the Union County Historical Museum, located in one of Lake Butler’s original buildings, for a glimpse into the area’s past.

To the east, Bradford County continues the region’s rustic appeal. Its largest town, Starke, serves as a hub for festivals and events, including the popular Strawberry Festival each spring, celebrating the area’s agricultural roots. In August, the Starke Bike Festival draws motorcycle enthusiasts for a weekend of games, food, music, and contests.

Outdoor lovers will find plenty of water to explore. Santa Fe Lake, the largest in the area, lies at the southern edge, while Sampson, Rowell, and Crosby lakes offer excellent fishing opportunities west of Starke. A small canal connects Sampson and Rowell lakes, making them perfect for small boats. Lodging options in Bradford County include the scenic Hampton Lake Bed and Breakfast and the convenient Starke KOA for RV travelers.

Cyclists have more to explore with two scenic loops: the 61-mile Starke–Lake Butler Loop and the 32-mile Santa Fe Lake Loop, which winds through countryside, small towns, and conservation areas. And for thrill-seekers, the Florida International Rally and Motorsports Park (FIRM) near Keystone Heights offers a legal way to enjoy high-speed driving on a European-style racetrack.

Whether you’re fishing, cycling, or just soaking in the scenery, Florida’s North Central Countryside invites you to slow down and explore. This region offers a peaceful retreat filled with natural beauty and genuine hospitality. Quiet lakes, winding trails, and vibrant local festivals come together to create an experience that feels both refreshing and timeless. It’s a place where simple pleasures make for lasting memories and every visit reveals something new.
