The Giving Season is Here
The holiday grocery list can stretch beyond your own kitchen. Across Florida, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas offer chances to pack a meal, make a delivery or put something useful in a neighbor’s hands.
After November 17, there is still time to choose a job that fits your calendar. Some opportunities start with a donation; others need a few hours and a willingness to work. No elaborate plan required, though signing up beats vaguely promising to help.
In Orlando, Heart of Florida United Way keeps its Thanksgiving Project moving with Spice It Up Collection Drive donations accepted November 18–19. The seasonings help complete meal kits for families in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. It is a small, specific contribution to something familiar: a holiday meal prepared at home, according to a family’s own traditions.
Nearby, Southeastern Food Bank turns donated groceries into delivery-ready boxes through Food for Families. Volunteers can sort and pack November 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at its warehouse, 655 North Kissimmee Avenue in Ocoee. Thanksgiving morning deliveries follow November 26, with volunteers meeting at West Orlando Baptist Church between 8 and 11 a.m. Choose the packing table or the delivery route, depending on where you can be most useful.
That doorstep connection continues farther south. Meals on Wheels South Florida offers holiday opportunities centered on homebound older residents, including Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gift boxes. The boxes contain personal care items and necessities, with deliveries the week before Christmas. Call 954-714-6924 to discuss how to participate. A practical gift and a friendly visit belong together here.
December brings another shared packing table in Delray Beach. Listed on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s calendar, the JFS Hanukkah Meal Packing and Delivery event takes place December 6, 12:30–2:30 p.m., at Jacobson Family Food Pantry, 430 South Congress Avenue. Volunteers prepare festive meals and treats for local clients and families.
In Southwest Florida, Meals of Hope gathers volunteers for Holidays Without Hunger December 19 at Mike Greenwell Regional Park in North Fort Myers. Register ahead, arrive at 8:15 a.m. and pack meals from 9 to 11.
The common thread is follow-through. Pick a nearby opportunity, check the requested supplies or registration details and make room for it. A few hours can earn their place on a crowded holiday calendar.
