Swimsuits Out. Manatees In!

Swimsuits Out. Manatees In!

Florida’s first convincing sign of winter may arrive underwater. In Orange City, November changes Blue Spring from a place to swim into a place to watch manatees find warmth.

The handoff has a date. At Blue Spring State Park, swimming in the spring run is scheduled through November 14. When manatee season begins November 15, the park closes the run to swimming and other water activities so the animals can use it as a refuge. Florida winter has a way of making a 72-degree spring feel essential.

Manatees cannot tolerate cold water for long, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. As temperatures fall, Blue Spring’s steady warmth draws them in. From mid-November through March, hundreds can gather in the run, though the number visible on any given visit depends on conditions. For locals who know the spring as a summer swimming spot, watching it take on a different job is part of the season.

The water may be closed to visitors, but the view remains open from shore. Blue Spring’s boardwalk follows the run, giving people a way to observe without entering the manatees’ space. The park’s experiences and amenities guidance spells out the seasonal water restrictions, which are worth checking before anyone packs a towel out of habit.

There is another bit of planning to do before driving over: Blue Spring requires day-use visitors to reserve entry. Check the park’s current visitor information and secure a reservation before setting out. Manatee viewing works best as a patient walk, with time to pause at the rail and see what appears beneath the surface.

Afterward, Orange City offers two ways to turn the outing into lunch. Family-run Encanto Restaurant & Bakery serves Puerto Rican and Caribbean flavors. Saigon Sizzle serves Vietnamese dishes, including pho and banh mi. Either makes a sensible stop after a morning outdoors, particularly when the air finally has a little bite.

That is November’s local rhythm: the swimsuits go away, the boardwalk gets its turn, and the spring becomes a shelter for its winter regulars. The manatees have the right idea about where to spend a cool day.
