Shell Yeah! It’s Scallop Time

Shell Yeah! It’s Scallop Time

Want to go on a treasure hunt this summer? Bay scallop season is officially here! Part snorkeling adventure and part seafood harvest, scalloping combines sunny skies, Gulf Coast charm, and just enough excitement to keep everyone in your crew entertained.

Whether you’re in it for the tasty scallops or just the thrill of the hunt, scallop hunting is a great way to beat the heat, explore hidden coastal gems, and come home with the makings of a seriously fresh seafood dinner.

Where to Get Your Feet Wet

Some of the best spots to scallop this season include Crystal River and Homosassa, where clear, spring-fed waters offer ideal visibility and gentle currents. Steinhatchee and Keaton Beach are local favorites for their shallow grass beds and easy access. And if you’re after charm and quiet, Cedar Key delivers with old-Florida vibes, cozy stays, and scallops galore.

Gear Up and Get In

No boat? No problem. Whether you’re a seasoned scalloper or trying it for the first time, all you need is a snorkel, a mesh bag, and a Florida saltwater fishing license (unless you qualify for an exemption) to get started. Early mornings are the best time to head out— the water is calm, the sun is just rising, and the crowds haven’t arrived yet. Still, remember to always keep an eye out for boat traffic—use a diver-down flag for safety.

Know Before You Shuck

Bag limits keep things sustainable. The general rule of thumb is 2 gallons of whole scallops per person (or 1 pint of meat), with a 10-gallon limit per vessel, but be sure to check local regulations on bag limits and restricted areas before you go in case of changes.

From Bay to Table

Once you’ve got your haul, the fun continues in the kitchen (or at a local spot that’ll cook your catch). Scallops are quick to clean and even quicker to cook. Whether they’re seared, grilled, tossed in pasta, or battered and fried, they’re the flavorful finish to your sun-soaked adventure.

So mask up, dive in, and don’t forget the hot sauce! Scallop season’s here, and it won’t last forever…Catch ‘em while you can!
