Perdido Key's Best Excuse

There's a particular kind of restlessness that creeps into a coastal town around the third week of off season winter, once the crowds have thinned, the humidity's finally let up, and the locals start hunting for an excuse to leave the house. On Perdido Key, that excuse usually has a name attached to it these days, and lately it's been the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce, the outfit responsible for turning “what's there to do around here” into an actual calendar.

The Chamber doesn't just cheer for local business from the sidelines, it throws the kind of events that make people show up in costume. There's the ‘Witches & Werewolves: Paddle for a Purpose’ every October, part contest, part fundraiser, and entirely an excuse to get soaked in a cape. Snowbirds get their own welcome each January and February with the ‘Snowbird Hootenanny’, and by late January the ‘Perdido Key Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball’ turns the calendar's quietest stretch into its most sequined. Underneath all of it sits an annual membership that invites local business owners to trade a passing wave for an actual seat at the table, an ethos the Chamber sums up simply: “Building Community. Boosting Business. Celebrating Coastal Life.”

None of that momentum happens by accident. It's the kind of steady, unglamorous work that turns into a real reputation, and this year it's earned the Chamber their 2026 Best of Florida Award. For a stretch of coastline that runs on both tourists and traditions, that's a fitting nod to the group making sure there's always a reason, costume optional, to leave the house.
