Napster’s Back and Burning Its Way to Fort Lauderdale!

Napster’s Back and Burning Its Way to Fort Lauderdale!

If your first playlist involved a mix of Destiny’s Child, Usher, and a suspiciously slow download speed… It’s throwback time. Napster, the early-2000s icon that introduced many of us to digital music, is making a comeback. It’s not gonna be a standard nostalgia act either; Napster’s rolling into Florida with a serious business plan and big money behind it.

The platform’s new owner, tech firm Infinite Reality, is moving Napster’s next chapter to Fort Lauderdale—along with a massive production campus that’s about to put the city’s creative scene on a whole new level.

The Big Move, by the Numbers

Infinite Reality and the City of Fort Lauderdale are teaming up to turn a long-empty stretch of land off NW 31st Ave into a $163 million tech and entertainment hub. There’ll be movie studios, sound stages, indoor-outdoor film sets, and even a film school to help Florida’s next-gen creatives break into the biz.

Construction kicks off in 2025, and by 2026, the doors swing open to hundreds of new, high-paying jobs. Not too shabby for a former blank lot.

Who Is Infinite Reality, Anyway?

iR (as the cool kids call it) is a fast-growing company betting big on immersive media, AI, and creator-focused tech. They own the Drone Racing League, work with virtual retail platforms, back major esports teams—and now they’re rebooting Napster with a whole new spin.

With iR at the reins, Napster’s gearing up to make music something you actually do—not just something playing in the background. You’ll be able to pop into virtual hangouts, catch virtual shows, shop exclusive merch drops, and chat with artists, all in real time, all inside immersive 3D spaces. Sounds wild, right? Like something out of The Sims meets your favorite music festival—but with fewer porta-potties and better Wi-Fi.

A Little Napster Nostalgia

Back in our day (when Wi-Fi meant yelling at someone to get off the phone), Napster was half music goldmine, half internet roulette—and we absolutely lived for it. Remember when…

  • You burned CDs with Sharpie labels that definitely had a theme (and totally not about your crush…).
  • You downloaded Lose Yourself and got someone’s garage remix instead.
  • “Track 3” mysteriously cut off halfway through (RIP patience).

It was messy, glorious, and way ahead of its time. What’s it gonna look like now? No clue, but if low-rise jeans can come back, so can Napster. Whatever comes next, one thing’s clear: Fort Lauderdale’s about to go from beach town to backstage pass—and we’re here for it.
