Lake Tech Charts New Paths
Sixty years ago, Lake Technical College began helping Central Floridians turn practical skills into working careers. Today, the Eustis-based institution is still doing that work, with 32 career certificate programs, expanding campuses and an approach to education that keeps the next paycheck firmly in view.
The college’s programs span healthcare, public safety, manufacturing, transportation, hospitality, IT and other high-demand fields. Students learn from industry-expert instructors through hands-on training designed to prepare them for the workplace without the time or debt often associated with a traditional four-year degree. Strong local employer partnerships help keep that training connected to the skills businesses actually need.
This year, Lake Tech added Industrial Machinery Maintenance and Aluminum Welding and Fabrication, two programs that reflect the growing demand for specialized manufacturing skills. They join established offerings such as diesel technology, culinary arts and patient care, giving students a range of routes into the workforce.
The college’s reach extends beyond its Main Campus on Kurt Street in Eustis. Specialized facilities in Tavares include the Institute of Public Safety, the Transportation Innovation Hub and Veterinary Assisting, while the new Lake Technical College South campus in Clermont expands access for students in the region. Adult education remains part of the mission, with GED preparation and English for Speakers of Other Languages classes offered throughout Lake and Sumter Counties.
The results give that practical approach some weight. Across its career-technical education programs, Lake Tech reports a 100 percent licensure pass rate, a 90 percent program completion rate and an 86 percent job placement rate. Those numbers reflect a college focused on getting students through training and into careers, rather than simply getting them enrolled.
That work has earned Lake Technical College a 2026 Best of Florida Regional Award during its 60th anniversary year.
