History, But Make It Hands-On
Most museums will tell you to look but not touch. At the Military Heritage Museum, they hand you the controls and say, “Go ahead, fly the Huey.” Okay, maybe not that Huey, but with flight simulators, VR missions, and even a laser gun range, this isn’t your average wander-through-and-yawn history tour. It’s 17,000 square feet of living, breathing stories where kids line up to test their aim, grandparents try the simulators “just once,” and everyone leaves with a grin and a story to tell.
What really makes this place unforgettable is the people behind it. Veterans guide the way, sharing details you’ll never find in a textbook, the hum of rotors before takeoff, the nerves of waiting in the trenches, the humor that kept spirits alive in impossible moments. Pair those voices with more than 20,000 artifacts, from WWI trenches to a Vietnam-era Huey and history doesn’t just sit behind glass, it comes alive. Whether you’re twelve or seventy-two, you walk out with a piece of that story stitched into your memory.
So, when the Museum earned a 2025 Best of Florida Award, it wasn’t just a trophy, it was a community celebration. Every volunteer, donor, and visitor has a hand in keeping these stories alive. This recognition proves that honoring veterans doesn’t have to be quiet or solemn, it can be powerful, hands-on, and even fun. After all, remembering where we’ve been makes where we’re going that much brighter. Here’s to more flight simulations, more campfire-worthy stories, and more moments that remind us freedom isn’t free but it sure is worth celebrating.
