The 22nd annual Florida Bat Festival swoops into Gainesville on Saturday, October 24, with hundreds of upside-down residents ready to kick off Bat Week from their favorite position!
Meet the Night Shift
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Lubee Bat Conservancy opens its grounds for a closer look at the animals behind the occasion, including some of the world’s largest bat species. Wildlife education exhibits offer context for all that staring, while children’s activities, local artisans, food trucks, and live music give families plenty to do between bat encounters.
The timing is fitting. The festival marks the beginning of Bat Week, an annual celebration of bats and their role in ecosystems, giving Lubee a chance to put the real animals front and center during a season when their plastic counterparts are dangling from porches everywhere.
And the real versions have a much better story.
Bats, Brews & a Bigger Purpose
Lubee focuses on bat conservation, research, and education, and proceeds from the festival support its conservation and education programs around the world. For visitors, that work becomes considerably more tangible when the subject is hanging a few feet away. A day that starts with curiosity about giant bats can end with a better understanding of why protecting them matters.
Adults 21 and older can take their bat watching with a side of beer at Bats & Brews. The beer garden experience includes unlimited samples, a souvenir tasting glass, and festival admission, adding a grown-up option to an otherwise family-focused day.
General admission is $10 for ages 13 and older and $5 for children ages 5 through 12. Children 4 and younger get in free, and the entire event goes on rain or shine.
After 22 years, the festival has given Gainesville an October tradition with an unusually charismatic cast. Spend a few hours watching enormous bats up close, learning what they do, and seeing the conservation work behind them, and the creatures usually relegated to Halloween décor get a chance to reclaim their reputation.
