Fall Back, Find a Hobby
When Florida turns the clocks back November 1, sunset starts arriving before many people are ready for the day to be over. Consider those darker evenings an invitation to pick up something new.
Trade Screen Time for Studio Time
In Mount Dora, the Mount Dora Center for the Arts offers plenty of ways to make an ordinary weeknight more interesting. Its classes and workshops stretch across painting, drawing, clay, adult dance and beginner guitar, making “I need a hobby” considerably easier to solve than it sounds.
Nearby, Yada Yada Pottery takes the hands-on approach seriously, with pottery wheel and clay classes for different experience levels. There is something satisfying about spending an evening making an actual object, even if your first bowl develops a personality of its own.
Farther south in Port Charlotte, Bisque IT Studio offers walk-in pottery painting, so trying something creative does not necessarily require committing to a six-week artistic reinvention. Pick a piece, choose the colors and see what happens.
Give the Weeknight Somewhere to Go
Of course, a new indoor routine does not have to involve paint under your fingernails. In Tavernier, Pinfish Entertainment gives Upper Keys residents a place for duckpin bowling and arcade games when an after-work evening needs more movement than another episode on the couch.
Stuart offers another creative route at Stuart Ceramics, where walk-ins can paint ready-made ceramics or create glass mosaics. Pottery wheel lessons are available too, making it possible to start casually and get more ambitious later.
Then there is DeLand’s Museum of Art, where the calendar includes workshops, guided tours, talks and programs for different ages. November offerings range from drawing instruction to gallery tours, proving that a museum visit does not have to mean silently circling a room and reading wall labels.
The time change tends to get blamed for taking something away, namely that useful hour of evening daylight. A better fall routine can put something back. Choose a standing art class, make bowling night a weekly habit, visit a museum once a month or finally try the hobby that has been sitting on the someday list.
