Beyond the Launchpad

Florida has spent generations sending enormous machines into space. Increasingly, the state is also building more of those machines before they ever reach the launchpad.

Building Where the Rockets Fly

Blue Origin plans to invest $600 million in a new upper-stage manufacturing facility at its Rocket Park campus on Merritt Island. The estimated 830,000-square-foot development is expected to create 500 aerospace jobs paying an average of more than $98,000 annually.

Those figures are substantial, but the more important story is where the work will happen.

The facility will manufacture upper stages for New Glenn, Blue Origin’s heavy-lift orbital rocket. An upper stage continues carrying a payload after the lower portion of a rocket has completed its work, helping determine how much mass and volume can ultimately reach orbit.

By producing that hardware near the launch site, Blue Origin’s Rocket Park expansion can shorten the distance between manufacturing, testing, final preparation and flight. Moving oversized aerospace components is neither simple nor cheap. Each mile eliminated from the process reduces another logistical complication involving specialized vehicles, road access, schedules and delicate equipment.

Florida has long been known as the place where rockets depart. Co-locating more production with launch operations gives the Space Coast a larger role in everything that happens before liftoff.

An Industrial Ecosystem Takes Shape

The project expands Blue Origin’s existing Florida presence, which already includes manufacturing, launch and support operations across Brevard and Orange counties. Its broader work with Space Florida reflects an economic strategy built around creating a complete aerospace ecosystem rather than collecting isolated facilities.

That ecosystem requires more than engineers. Large-scale rocket production depends on machinists, technicians, welders, inspectors, logistics teams, software specialists and workers trained to handle materials and systems with very little tolerance for error. Suppliers, contractors and training programs grow around those employers, allowing one factory investment to influence a much wider regional workforce.

Space Florida is supporting the upper-stage facility through the Spaceport Improvement Program. The program treats space infrastructure as part of Florida’s transportation network, placing launch complexes, manufacturing sites, utilities and access improvements within the same long-term planning conversation.

The state’s official economic development announcement frames the project as advanced manufacturing growth, but its significance stretches beyond another large building. Florida is strengthening its ability to design, build, test and launch spacecraft from the same region.

The next chapter of Florida manufacturing may be too large for the factory roof and built to travel considerably farther than the interstate.
