Aldi’s Florida Takeover
That old, empty Winn-Dixie in your neighborhood may not stay empty for long... Aldi is stepping up its game, and Florida is at the heart of its next moves.
The discount grocer plans to open 18 new stores across the Sunshine State this year. It’s bringing more jobs, more tax revenue, and best of all… More affordable groceries! From Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, soon you’ll be able to pop a quarter in your cart and walk the aisle of shame (you know the one).
Florida’s Grocery Shuffle
The first of Florida’s new Aldi locations opened in Ocala this June, with several more on the way. But this expansion isn’t just about new builds—Aldi is also transforming the landscape by converting former Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets into Aldi stores!
Here’s the aisle by aisle breakdown:
- Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers in 2023—a Jacksonville-based company that operated regional grocery chains including Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarket, and Fresco y Más.
- About 220 of those stores across the Southeast are being converted to the Aldi format.
- In Florida, that means fewer vacant storefronts and more accessible grocery options—especially in communities that previously relied on Winn-Dixie. Some of these neighborhoods are considered food deserts, where access to fresh, affordable groceries is limited.
Nationwide, Aldi plans to open 225 new stores in 2025 alone, marking its largest single-year expansion in U.S. history. The company already operates more than 2,400 stores, making it the third-largest grocery chain by store count! And in 2024, 19 million new shoppers tried Aldi for the first time.
So What’s the Big Deal?
Aldi keeps it simple—and cheap! There’s no deli counter, pharmacy, bakery, or name-brand overload. Just a curated mix of store-brand staples at up to 36% less than traditional grocers.
According to Aldi’s 2025 Price Leadership Report:
- It's the lowest-priced national grocery chain!
- Shoppers save a combined $8.3 billion per year.
- A family of four can save nearly $4,000 annually!
- 1 in 4 U.S. households now shops Aldi.
- It’s ranked #1 for value and everyday low prices.
That no-frills model doesn’t just help shoppers—it fuels local economies, too! In 2023 alone, Aldi contributed an estimated $14 billion to the U.S. economy and supported over 90,000 jobs (directly and indirectly)!
Built to Save—and to Last
Aldi’s growth isn’t just about more stores—it’s about smarter ones!
- They’ve phased out single-use plastic bags.
- Aldi’s has energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration.
- This year, they’re aiming for packaging that’s 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
- Aiming for a 15% reduction in packaging overall!
As Aldi expands across Florida, it’s delivering more than just discounts… It’s bringing jobs, investment, and sustainable progress to neighborhoods that need it most. Keep an eye out for one near you!
