A Festival With Serious Flavor!

A Festival With Serious Flavor!

Halloween Saturday is getting a lot more colorful in Tampa this year. On October 31, India Festival Tampa Bay returns with 13 hours of dance, food, shopping and a crowd expected to top 10,000.

One Very Full Saturday

The 37th annual India Festival Tampa Bay runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds, turning Halloween into a full-day celebration of Indian culture and Tampa Bay’s South Asian community.

Presented by the Gujarati Samaj of Tampa Bay, the festival brings together more than 85 dance teams and 200 exhibitors and vendors. Onstage, performances span classical traditions, regional folk styles and contemporary dance, with groups competing for prizes throughout the day. Expect everything from Garba and Raas to Bhangra and classical forms such as Bharatanatyam and Kathak.

That is a considerable amount of dancing before we have even discussed lunch.

The food court makes a strong argument for arriving hungry. Vendors will serve Indian street foods including chaat, pani puri and dosas alongside full meals, regional specialties and traditional sweets. Meanwhile, the festival marketplace fills with clothing, jewelry, handicrafts and other Indian goods, so wandering between performances can easily become a shopping trip of its own.

Come for the Food, Stay for the Stage

What makes India Festival work are all the activities happening under one roof. Cultural exhibits explore India’s regional diversity, history and art, while the stage keeps a steady rotation of performers moving through the day. Families can settle in for several hours without having to manufacture ways to keep everyone interested.

For anyone planning ahead, festival tickets are available online, with admission covering the full day, cultural performances, dance competition viewing, exhibits and marketplace access. Food is purchased separately, which may be useful information for anyone already mentally budgeting for a second dosa.

Holding the festival on October 31 gives Tampa Bay an especially good alternative to the usual Halloween Sroutine. Costumes and candy can still happen later. From morning through evening, there is music to hear, dancing to watch, food to try and a community gathering that has been part of Tampa Bay for nearly four decades.
