A Berry Big Day in Wellborn!

A Berry Big Day in Wellborn!

Blueberries have officially earned their own small-town takeover. Not the polite little garnish sitting on top of a brunch plate either. We’re talking parade-of-people energy, syrup-stained paper trays, lawn chairs near live music, and enough baked goods to make your car smell like a pie shop for three days straight.

That’s the vibe headed back to Suwannee County when the 32nd Annual Wellborn Blueberry Festival rolls into Andrews Square on June 6. For one Saturday each summer, the tiny community of Wellborn transforms into a full-blown celebration of one of the area’s most recognizable crops.

Small Town, Full Schedule

The day starts early with a blueberry pancake breakfast running from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at several nearby community spots. Tickets stay refreshingly inexpensive at just $6 for adults and $3 for kids, which means families, church groups, antique car enthusiasts, and people who simply heard the words “homemade blueberry syrup” all end up sharing the same breakfast line before spreading out across town for the day’s festivities.

By midmorning, Andrews Square turns into a sea of blueberry treats, craft vendors and local art. The Wellborn Community Association’s Country Store stays busy all day with homemade pies, cobblers, jams, jellies, and syrups that regulars know not to wait on too long. Meanwhile, kids head for the games and petting zoo while the car show fills up with polished classics and pickup trucks that draw crowds almost as quickly as the pancake breakfast.

Part of what makes the Wellborn Blueberry Festival work so well is that it never tries too hard. The trolley service keeps people moving between parking areas and downtown, leashed pets are welcome, and the festival layout makes it easy to spend the day bouncing from pancake breakfasts to craft booths to live entertainment without constantly checking a map. Come hungry, bring a cooler for the jams and pies, and don’t wait too late on the cobbler line unless disappointment pairs well with blueberries.
