About
The Humane Society of Marion County (HSMC) has been a cornerstone of animal welfare in our community for over six decades. Established with a mission to promote the humane treatment of animals and prevent cruelty, HSMC has grown into a dynamic organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need.
Our facility in Ocala serves as a sanctuary for cats, dogs, and other small animals, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment. We are proud to be a no-kill shelter, committed to giving every animal a second chance at a happy and healthy life. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers works tirelessly to ensure that each animal receives the love, care, and medical attention they deserve.
Our mission is to enhance the lives of animals and the people who love them through compassionate care, community engagement, and advocacy. We believe in creating a more humane world by educating the public on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare issues.
- Adoptions and Reunions: Last year alone, we facilitated over 1,600 adoptions and reunited 112 lost pets with their families, making a profound impact on both the animals and their new owners.
- Community Outreach: Our educational programs reach tens of thousands of individuals annually, teaching the importance of spaying and neutering, proper pet care, and the benefits of adoption.
- Volunteer Engagement: Our robust volunteer program harnesses the passion and energy of community members who contribute over 10,000 hours to support our mission yearly. Volunteers assist with everything from daily care and socialization of animals to organizing and participating in fundraising events.
- Multilingual Support: We have implemented multilingual adoption and foster support to better serve our diverse community.
- Fee Reductions and Accessibility: In June, we reduced adoption fees by 25% and removed appointment and ID requirements, making it easier for families to welcome a new pet into their home.
- Facility Improvements: Thanks to generous grants and donations, we have recently renovated our lobby and office areas to provide a more welcoming space for visitors and to better showcase our animals.
At the core of our operations are values that reflect our dedication to animal welfare and community service:
- Compassion and Respect: We treat all animals and people with kindness and consideration.
- Integrity and Transparency: We operate with honesty and uphold the highest ethical standards.
- Advocacy and Education: We are committed to promoting humane treatment and educating the public on animal welfare.
- Excellence and Innovation: We strive for excellence in all we do and embrace innovative solutions to improve our services.
As we move forward, the Humane Society of Marion County remains steadfast in our mission to provide a safe haven for animals and to foster a compassionate community. We are excited about the future and the continued opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of animals and people alike.
We invite you to join us in our mission. Whether through adoption, volunteering, or donating, your support is crucial to our success. Together, we can create a brighter future for the animals of Marion County and beyond.
