Next Level Barber Shop

My journey into barbering began at the age of 14 when I started cutting my family's hair, eventually progressing to my own beard and haircuts. From that early experience, I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a barber. Over the years, I refined my skills at Old School Barbershop in Puerto Rico, where I worked for four years, perfecting my craft and developing my passion for the trade.

Eventually, I made the move to Florida, settling in Ocala. During the licensing process, I worked for three months at Chariot Eagle Mobile Home Construction. During that period, I nearly gave up on barbering, doubting whether my Puerto Rican license would be accepted state side. The uncertainty tested my resolve, but a chance encounter with a coworker reignited my determination.

A coworker’s encouragement during lunch made me realize I needed to pursue my passion despite the obstacles. He suggested I should be working in a barbershop given my skills. Motivated by his words, I invested my limited resources into submitting my license to the DBPR. A few months later, I was approved to take the barbering exam, and upon earning my license, I began working at a local shop in Marion Oaks, Ocala.

At that shop, I dedicated myself to building a clientele by offering unique services such as black masks, steam treatments, and airbrush enhancements—innovative offerings that set me apart. After nearly three years, I decided to act upon my dream of opening my own barbershop. In December 2019, I secured a location at 128 Marion Oaks Blvd., Suite 103, and invested everything I had into launching Next Level Barbershop. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed our grand opening, we persevered.

Despite opening in March 2020, we had to face closing during the height of the pandemic. It was an incredibly challenging time—struggling to cover bills without income. However, we reopened in May, and the business quickly gained momentum. Today, Next Level Barbershop employs nine barbers and operates seven days a week, fostering a family-oriented, relaxed environment filled with laughter and free of judgment.

Building on this success, my wife, Maria Vega and I are in the processing of expanding. Opening Next Level Barber School. Maria, a military veteran has degrees in business management, experience as a licensed barber and cosmetologist, has taken on the role of director for Next Level Barber School. She has managed the necessary paperwork and will oversee the school's operations. The school will operate as a night program, with classes scheduled after hours, and already has a waiting list of eager future professionals. 

Together, we are committed to advancing in the barber industry and inspiring the next generation of barbers, guided by our faith and unwavering perseverance.
